THE ADVANTAGES OF DOING FREE JOBS
You certainly didn't expect to see a post like this. You have always been told that "for all you do, place a price tag". I am an advocate of monetizing your skills. I shared a post on Why You should monetize your skills. But today, I'd be sharing some secrets that I discovered as it bothers on the benefits of doing free jobs.
This sounds rather contradictory. How do you 'benefit' from what you did for 'free'? An average African would not see this as true because we have been trained to always demand for 'something' before doing 'anything' for 'anybody'.
However, there are benefits and rewards in doing free jobs and rendering free services.
ADVANTAGES OF DOING FREE JOBS
1. It opens you up to criticisms
2. It helps you become better at what you do
3. It prepares your portfolio
4. It positions you for the high spending customers
5. It helps to publicize you
The explanations are given below.
1. It Opens you up to criticisms: As a newbie, you improve your skills through criticisms either positive or negative. When you do free jobs for people, you will get feedbacks and obviously, your job won't be professional enough at this early stage of your career. There will be criticisms from your 'customers' and this criticisms will help you point out where you need improvements. If you wish to know how good you have become in a skill, try doing a job for free.
2. You become better at what you do: The more you do free jobs, the more you're criticized and the more better you become. Doing free jobs is not a total loss. You learn from your mistakes and improve on your skills.
When I started writing, I started out with rendering free writing services. I didn't see it as a problem because I needed to find a way of becoming better daily. Most of the times, you can as well volunteer to help an individual or a company using your skills. The more free services you render, the more experiences you'd have and this will definitely build your confidence.
3. It prepares your portfolio: Your portfolio is a list or a collection of your works done either for yourself or for a client. You cannot build your portfolio by first setting out to place a price tag on your skills when you aren't a professional yet and you cannot be a professional until you practice. One way to practice is to do free jobs. The more free jobs you, the more samples you'd have to show to potential customers. The more samples you have, the more chances you have to be hired. I hope you understand this.
4. It prepares you for the high spending customers: For the fact that you're rendering a service for free doesn't mean you should do it in an unprofessional manner. You can't tell who will come across it online or offline. I mentioned this in my post on Why You Should Monetize Your Skills. When you do a job for free, you are invariably positioning yourself to attract paying customers. Your work can be viewed by a person who can pay you to do same thing for him. As much as making money is the goal, don't put it in front of your skill or service.
5. It helps to publicize you: One way you can reach out to a lot of people and win lots of customers is through the advert of friends, colleagues and family members you do free jobs for.
Your biggest customer could be one of your friend's friends. A recommendation from your friend can go a long way. With the use of facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, the person you did a free job for can attract people to you. I know making money is the goal but sometimes as a start, you can take up volunteer roles and build your portfolio.
Your free jobs will definitely announce you to the world.
